TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. – The Florida College Men's Soccer team was victorious over the Ave Maria University Gyrenes last Saturday with a score of 2-1.
The Falcons and Gyrenes hit the ground running early in this match. In the 11th minute Ave Maria's Anderson Duggan lofted a through ball into the box, where Andre Betiolli met it with a diving header to find the bottom corner of the net, pushing the score to 1-0. The game after this fell strangely silent for the remainder of the first half. Shots rang out, but none hit home.
The match shifted just nine minutes into the second half when a booming punt from Falcons' keeper Ahiezer Santiago caught the feet of Jhon Solis. Solis dribbled in on net and fired a shot from close range, but Gyrenes' keeper Andrija Vujakovic made the save. However, Solis collected the rebound and passed it across the six yard-box to James Mwakyonde, who slammed it into the open goal bringing the Falcons' level 1-1. The Falcons didn't stop there, as just two minutes later Mwakyonde broke away on a counterattack, and found Solis who fired a hard driven shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner of the net putting the Falcons up 2-1. The Falcons would fly this one back to the nest holding on to win 2-1 to collect their first victory of the season.
"Going into this game we had no doubt about grabbing this win," said Solis. "I trust my teammates, myself, and the coaching staff. Winning this game meant a lot to us and it doesn't stop here"
