Jersey Retirement Critera
The purpose of the Florida College Athletics Retired Jersey procedure is to recognize those student-athletes and coaches who have had extraordinary athletic accomplishments during their playing or coaching careers. This document sets forth the procedures for nominations and selection, as well as the criteria to be considered in determining whether a jersey should be retired.
Election Committee & Process
- Nomination for retiring a student-athlete's jersey number must originate with the current head coach of that student-athlete's sport or the head coach of the sport during his/her eligibility, with the current director of athletics or with a former director of athletics. Additional letters of recommendation may be accepted from any one of the four individuals mentioned above. The responsibility for verifying the accuracy of the information included rests with the individual making the nomination.
- Procedures outlined below will apply to the current varsity sports of basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball (sports for which jersey numbers are used).
- Student-athletes are immediately eligible to have their number retired at the conclusion of their athletic eligibility.
- Those attaining retired number status will be recognized during a home contest of the associated sport, or an athletic event deemed appropriate, as scheduled by Florida College Athletics. Jerseys will be displayed publicly, as appropriate, with some kind of sign of identification.
Nominees must meet the following criteria:
- Nominee must have received a bachelor's degree from Florida College or associate's degree if the student-athlete attended Florida College before 1997.
- Nominee must have accomplished two of the following
- Be the holder (past or present) of at least one and preferably multiple school single game, season or career records
- Be named the Conference Player of the Year or First Team All-Conference for a minimum of two years
- Earned a national award recognized by the NAIA or USCAA (ex. National Player of the Year)
- Earned a First Team All-America designation by an organization recognized by the NAIA or USCAA
- He/she was named Outstanding Player of a national championship event (ex. NAIA Championship MVP)
- Nominee must have represented and continue to represent Florida College in the highest possible manner in all endeavors within sports as well as his/her personal life
