TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. – The Florida College Women's Soccer team lost to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes 2-1 on Saturday night.
The Lady Falcons and Gyrenes faced off in what was a beautiful evening for soccer. With high energy and excitement in the air, this game was off to a flying start for the Gyrenes when in the 10th minute Rachel Dalton played a perfectly weighted through ball into the feet of Claire Wrobleski who curled the ball inside the far post to put the Gyrenes up 1-0. Despite the constant barrage of shots, the Lady Falcons stood firm and kept this game at just a one goal deficit going into the half.
Coming back from half, the Gyrenes looked to start the second half just as they started the first and they did just that. In the 52nd minute Kana Mateaki played a long ball over the top that Claire Wrobleski collected and dribbled into the near post and fired it from close range past keeper Jillian Francis to put the Gyrenes up 2-0 just eight minutes into the restart. With the Gyrenes up by two goals, the Lady Falcons were not going away quietly as they won a corner in the 81st minute before Kendle Valido whipped the ball into the danger area. The ball bounced around the six-yard box before Angie Sciacca drew the Lady Falcons closer making it 2-1 with just eight minutes remaining. Francis kept the Lady Falcons within striking distance making 14 saves on 16 attempts, but the comeback fell just short with the Gyrenes taking the victory 2-1.
"I felt that our performance against Ave Maria created a big step for us in improving for future games to come. Although we lost, I was happy about our performance when comparing it to our last game against Ave," said Sciacca.
